Update for Android Lollipop-Which phone will get it and when

android lollipop

Android M may be the Android version on everyone’s lips, but the various Android Lollipop updates – from Android 5.0 to Android 5.1.1 – continue to roll out across the world. While only a few phones have Android 5.1.1, many more are still looking forward to Android 5.0.2 or even 5.1 – and the latest to get some 5.1 love are a few Motorola and HTC devices. We’ve gathered all of the information on which phones will get which Lollipop update and when.

Google

The entire Nexus family has now received the coveted Lollipop update up to Android 5.1.1. One of the perks of Nexus phones is that you can download factory images for the latest – and older – Android versions from the official Google Developers’ site. The Nexus 7 (2013, Wi-Fi) received a new Android 5.1.1 factory image on June 30, with minimal additions.

Just click the link, then scroll down until you find your Nexus device and download the version you want. Factory images generally appear before OTA (over the air) updates – but not always – so if you’re feeling impatient you can just download the latest Android version manually.

If you want to update your Nexus device to Lollipop manually, then follow our guide on how to update your Nexus 5 to Android 5.1.1 Lollipop. This guide also applies if you’re not using a Nexus 5 or want to update to a different Lollipop version – just swap out the Nexus 5 and Android 5.1.1 with the files for your particular Nexus device and the Android version you want.

Motorola

Motorola has made it even easier to determine if and when your device will get the Android Lollipop update thanks to a dedicated page on the official Motorola website. As of yet, Motorola device owners are unable to see an exact date of the update, only that it will or will not arrive on their device. Hopefully more info will be added in the near future.

The good news for Verizon Moto X (2014) owners is that the Android 5.1 OTA update is rolling out June 30, as announced on Verizon’s support pages

In addition, we know that the Android 5.1 soak test for the Droid Turbo is also rolling out, meaning a widespread Droid Turbo/Moto Maxx release is not far away. The announcement was made by Motorola’s David Schuster on Google+.

HTC

The HTC One M7 and One M8 jumped aboard the Lollipop ship in early 2015. While it’s certain that the One M8 will be making the jump beyond Android 5.1 (eventually), there is some uncertainty around the HTC One M7. The rare Google Play Edition of HTC’s two-year-old former flagship got the Android 5.1 update, but there has been no word on whether the standard One M7 will get it.

HTC was one of the first smartphone manufacturers to comment on the Lollipop release, promising that they’d roll out Android updates within 90 days of their release. While the HTC One M8 just managed to stick to this promise, the One M7 rollout has been a bit slower. The One M7 Lollipop update began in February, but not everyone has received it yet.

In the US, HTC’s VP of Product Management, Mo Versi announced the Sprint HTC One M9 and AT&T HTC Desire EyeAndroid 5.0 Lollipop update on Twitter. The OTA rollouts are scheduled for July 1.

Samsung

After being out for a few months, the Galaxy S6 and S6 Edge are in line for their first Android updates in June. Besides the usual bug fixes and stability improvements, owners can look forward to taking photos in RAW format. This is good news for amateur photographers, who will now be able to do more in-depth photo editing of their Galaxy S6 photos. The update will also include a ‘Guest’ mode.

The Galaxy S5 Mini is set to receive Android 5.0.1 Lollipop in Q2 2015, while the Galaxy S4, S5, Galaxy Note 4, Galaxy Alpha and Galaxy Note 3 have already received it. The Galaxy A5 and A7 received the update in January.

LG

LG was one of the early adopters of the Lollipop update, and many of its recent handsets are now running it. 2013’s LG G2, for example, received the Lollipop update and jumped straight to version 5.0.2. There has been no word on whether the G2 Mini will get Lollipop, but we think it seems likely.

Sony

Finally, Sony has announced that AOSP versions of Android 5.0.2 Lollipop are rolling out to the Xperia Z1, Z1 Compact and Z Ultra. What’s more, Sony has brought back the ‘Close all’ feature that disappeared when Lollipop was first released. The popular feature is making a comeback on all Lollipop devices.

Since then, Sony has announced that Android 5.1 will be rolling out to select devices from July.

Huawei

Chinese smartphone giant Huawei isn’t usually the first to the table when it comes to Android updates, but slowly and surely it’s appearing on devices. The Ascend Mate 7, Ascend P7 and Honor 6 look like they will get Lollipop in June, while Huawei is inviting Ascend Mate 2 owners to register to test Lollipop 5.0 on their devices.

Surprisingly, the recently-released Honor 4X and Honor 6+ will have to wait until August to get the Lollipop update. It’ll nearly be time for Android M by then.

OnePlus

Ever the maverick, OnePlus has already rolled out its mildly tweaked version of Android 5.0.2, Cyanogen OS 12. There’s more to the story though. As is well known, OnePlus and Cyanogen had a big falling-out, which means that OnePlus is phasing in its own OS, OxygenOS, to the OnePlus One.

Cyanogen OS remains the official OTA operating system for the OnePlus One for now, but OxygenOS will be the default operating system for the OnePlus Two, but on the One it’s only available as a manual install for now. You can download OxygenOS here.

Both Cyanogen OS and OxygenOS are based on the latest versions of Android, but with minor tweaks and offering more customizability. You can read up on the two operating systems in our Cyanogen OS vs OxygenOS comparison.

OnePlus says you can expect the OnePlus One update to CM12.1 based on Android 5.1 to arrive “soon”.

Asus

Late, but not last, Asus finally began rolling out Android 5.0 Lollipop to ZenFone 4, ZenFone 5 and ZenFone 6 owners in May 2015. With the release, Asus warned that many of the pre-installed apps on their devices will be deleted when people upgrade to Lollipop.

Pre-installed apps facing the chop include Battery Widget, Movie Studio, Cloud Print and Magic Smoke Wallpapers. Sounds like a quick and easy way to get rid of bloatware to us!

For the full list of release notes and things that will be affected by the Lollipop update on Asus devices, see Asus’ official Lollipop page for the ZenFone 5.

Oppo

The full Lollipop release is yet to appear on the Oppo Find 7, but you can now download the AOSP version of Lollipop for the device at Oppo’s forums. This will get rid of Oppo’s ColorOS interface, and replace it with the stock Lollipop interface, for those who are so inclined.

If you’re losing hope of an official OTA Lollipop update for the Find 7, you can also download Cyanogen OS (Android 5.0.2) for the device from XDA Developers’ forums.
